Early flop leaves HK shattered Chan Kin-ngai BADMINTON HONGKONG, who last year crushed New Zealand in the commonwealth Games bronze medal play-offs, had the tables truned on them by the Kiwis in their opening match inthe Sudirman Cup in Brondby, Denmark last night. The Group Four favourites, who romped home 5-0 in Auckland last January, were edged out 3-2 by a more experienced New Zealand squad on the second day of the world mixed team championship. "Our team is very young," explained Hongkong coaching director Diana Lo Leung Bik-luen. "After the Commonwealth Games we changed the whole team. The average age is only 21." "Technically New Zealand are not as good as us, but they're very tough. They are good fighters, We're given our team good preparation, but their problem is mental." Hongkong did not have the best of luck in the women's singles since Wong Chun-fan turned her right ankle on the first point against Rhona Robertson. It was a wonder therefore that she stretched the match to three sets before going down 2-11, 11-1, 11-12. "We expected to win the ladies' singles," said Lo. "Without that injury she would have won." Hongkong drew level when Chan Kin-ngaioutwitted Harrison 15-12, 15-4, but New Zealand nosed in front again with Robertson and Jenkins' 15-12, 14-18, 15-7 triumph in the women's doubles over Chung and Irene Chui Mei-yin. Then Ng and Tse Bun pushed the tie to the wire with a 4-15, 15-10, 15-11victory over Glenn Stewart and Nicholas Hall in the men's doubles. Hongkong who were relegated after finishing last in Group Three in Jakarta two years ago, face an even stiffer task in their remaining group matches against Germany today and Australia tomorrow. Lo said:"Our chance of gaining a promotion is now very alim following that defeat but I'm hopeful that we can retain our Group Four status." "Germany are slightly better than New Zealand but I'm confident we can best then if Wong is fit enough to take ber place." "Otherwise Chung will probably play singles, but that shouldn't be a big problem because she is our champion." "Australia are an even tougher opposition as they have been strengthened by Chinses immigrants Wei Yen and Anna Lao Aizhen." In Group Five, India thrashed Finland 4-1 in the match they regarded as likely to be the toughest in their promotion bid. "I've seen the USA and Poland, and we should win against them." said Indian manager Pradip Chaliha. "I thought this would be our hardest match, but it was not very tough, apart from the men's singles. He was quite good." By that stage, however, india were already 2-0 ahead thanks to Madhumita Bisht's 12-9, 11-1 win over Ning Sundberg, phus Vinod Kumar and Rajiv Bagga's 15-7, 15-10 success against Tony Tuominen and Robert Zigjequist. George Thomas then lost 9-15, 6-15 to Pontus Jantti, Bisht and Manjusha Pawangatkar clinchen victory by beating Sundberg and Sara Ussher 15-12, 15-1.

國際羽聯排名六十一位　陳健倪獲奧運參賽資格　在國際羽球聯會最新公布的參加奧運會的電腦排名表中，本港羽球手陳健倪名列六十一位。根據每個國家只有三名球手參賽的條件下，陳健倪已獲得參賽權了。　據香港體育學院總教練盧梁壁聯指出，於國際羽聯仍在計算下半年的各項比賽，包括格蘭披治賽的成績，因此此排名仍會不斷變動，但陳健倪在下半年亦會參加各項比賽，故相信他能獲得參加奧運的资格。　盧太又指出，除了陳健倪外，本港其他球手如陳榮傑及黄爲立等，尤其是黄爲立，因他曾參加過三次比賽，且在最近的世界羽球錦標賽中表現出色，故他們均是很有希望能爭取到明年奧運的參賽權的。　下半年港將會出征的赛事，計有馬來西亞公開賽、新加坡公開赛、澳洲公開賽、紐西蘭公開賽、德國公開賽及荷蘭公開賽等。（玉）

夥拍陳健倪如魚得水「我沒有正式比賽四年多了，今次落場都是他（陳健倪）教路。」這話竟出自中國國家隊總教練李永波，當然他只是說笑吧了，李永波告別運動員生涯多年，昨日在荃灣蕙荃體育館夥拍前港隊猛將陳健倪出戰本年度羽毛球雙打聯賽準決賽，替恒亞蘭社A隊出戰南華會A隊爭奪決賽資格，除李永波外，中國首席男雙蔣欣，黃展忠也有來港協助，得到三名高手助陣下的恒亞蘭社A隊絡以六比三挫敗南華會A隊，率先殺入決賽，將與海裕或漚俊之勝方角逐冠軍殊榮。蔣欣，黃展忠球技了得，自然能輕易過關斬將，他們的「師傅」李永波也不甘示弱，在本港球迷面前獻技，再加上與陳健倪合作，簡直實力雄厚，李永波笑言：「好輕體，皆因沒有壓力。」他在國內每周也有陪男女雙打調練，故體能仍不俗。有機會參加奧運的黃展忠，有信心及有實力奪得男雙獎牌，但最重要視乎臨場發揮。
